The Zachary City Council approved at its May 26 meeting several planning and zoning matters, paving the way for another Dollar General, a restaurant and a church.

Unlike a November meeting when residents urged the council to consider potential traffic hazards a new Dollar General store would bring to the Charles Harelson tract on Old Scenic Highway, no one was present to speak against the resubdivision and rezone of the Hubert C. Owens Tract, which is next to a veterinary clinic and not adjacent to homes like the previous property.

The only request came from Councilman Francis Nezianya, who asked that the building not have any metal on its exterior.

Ed Voltolina, on behalf of Dollar General, confirmed there would be either stucco or brick on the building’s exterior but no metal. “It’ll be the nicest store possible,” Voltolina said.

The request for the property to be rezoned from residential estates to commercial general was approved.

The proposed store would be the third like it in Zachary. Dollar Generals are located at 5514 Main St. and 20131 Plank Road.

On another agenda item, the council approved the rezoning of property at the corner of Independence Boulevard and Old Scenic Highway in the Copper Mill Business Park from commercial suburban to commercial general to make room for a new restaurant.

A site plan review for the A.C. Mills Jr. tract also was approved allowing for the construction of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Pride-Port Hudson Road.
