Chloe Delee spent Saturday morning showing her family and members of the Zachary community how her fifth-grade class used a Kids to Park grant from the National Park Trust to improve the Flanacher Street Park and encourage reading in the community.

The Kids to Park grant reflects both on the school system and BREC, the local parks system. Copper Mill Elementary had a winning class last year, and this year, two classes — a fifth- and a sixth-grade class — won the national grant awards, the only two awarded in the state of Louisiana.

Last month, the fifth-graders had their school day at the park fulfilling the three pillars — stewardship, education and health — promoted by the National Park Trust. The park was updated with painted benches, bleachers, new chess and checkers with BREC rocks, and a new Little Library.
