Around Zachary for June 9, 2016 _lowres

January is National Blood Donor Month, and in an effort to encourage donors to give blood, Lane Regional Medical Center and United Blood Services will host a blood drive from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Friday in the hospital’s Staff Development Classroom, 6300 Main St.

Blood is usually in short supply during winter months because of holidays, travel, bad weather and illnesses, according to UBS, and January is a difficult month for blood centers to collect donations.

A reduction in donor turnout can put the nation’s blood inventory at a critical low.

Appointments are not required, but donors are encouraged to sign up online at unitedbloodservices.org. Enter LaneRegional as the code.

As a reminder, UBS is the sole provider of blood to Lane RMC, so donations will benefit Lane and the communities it serves.
