A Friday night football game in Bronco Stadium would not be complete without the sights and sounds of the Zachary High band, Bronco Belles, color guard and twirler.
On Sept. 25, the band and spirit groups have an opportunity to gain national exposure when the Broncos play Calvary Baptist in a televised football game on ESPNU.
To get the students to the game in Shreveport, bus transportation is estimated at $8,000, Band Director Jason Venable said.
According to Venable, taking school activity buses, which are owned by the Zachary School Board and used for local field trips, is not an option.
“Activity buses cannot go outside the Metro Baton Rouge area, and we can’t take First Student buses because they can only operate during certain time frames,” Venable said. “We would have to leave at noon or before, so First Student is not an option either.”
As a result, Venable is asking the Zachary community for assistance.
“There is not enough money in the budget to cover this expense,” he said.
Businesses, organizations and residents are encouraged to make contributions to help the students.
Levels of donations include gold donors, $500; silver donors, $250; bronze donors, $100; and Friends of ZHS Spirit Groups, $50.
Donors will be thanked in an ad taken out the week of the football game with levels of contributions listed, Venable said.
“However, anyone can donate any amount,” he said. “All contributions will be welcome.”
Donations may be mailed to Zachary High School, Attn: Jason Venable, 4100 Bronco Lane, Zachary, LA 70791.
The ZHS marching band and jazz ensemble participate in the Christmas parade, homecoming parade and elementary school parades, during Veterans Day celebrations, charitable fundraisers, the annual Mayor’s Prayer Breakfast, at the opening convocation for school district personnel, academic and athletic events and at area nursing homes, according to the Bronco Band Boosters, a group of parents who fundraise for the band program.
“The band and spirit groups do a lot for others; now they need our help getting to this game,” Venable said.
