Daniel Rittell, 20, a 2014 graduate of Zachary High School, is in his second year of wrestling at Williams Baptist College in Walnut Ridge, Arkansas.
Of the six teams competing Feb. 20 in the 2016 American Midwest Conference Championships in Hannibal, Missouri, the Eagles of Williams Baptist came out on top, bringing home four gold medals and the team championship plaque with 191 points overall.
Rittell won first place in the 165-pound weight class by defeating Jake Mattson, of Missouri Baptist University, and Connor Webber, of Lyon College. His win earned the gold medal, while Webber finished in second place, and Mattson took home the bronze.
The Zachary native will compete in the upcoming regional championships and the nationals in Topeka, Kansas.
Rittell is the first Bronco wrestler at Zachary High to have been offered a four-year scholarship in the sport.
He is the son of Rip and Jacki Rittell, of Zachary.
