StEP program students to pitch projects

The Leadership North Alumni Association Inc. and Louisiana Small Business Development Center at Southern University have partnered to develop the region’s next generation of business owners and community leaders through their Student Entrepreneur Program.

The pilot program invited students residing in Baker, Central, Zachary, East and West Feliciana and Pointe Coupee parishes and entering grades nine through 12 in the 2015-16 school year to participate.

Three Zachary teens and one from Slaughter responded to the invitation by attending three half-day sessions in June led by business development executives at Southern. They learned how to create, build and grow a successful business.

LNAA President Carla Sebile said the teens, ages 13-16, have had a few weeks to prepare a presentation of their business, product, program and future career path and will participate in a “pitch” competition scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Saturday at Southern University’s Small Business Development Center in Baton Rouge.

Cash awards will be given to all participants, with a larger cash award presented to the overall winner.

A panel of two to three business leaders, who have not met the students, will judge the presentations.

Sebile says though the pitches will be closed to the public, once the winner has been declared, information will be released about the participants and their projects.
