Advocate staff photo by STACY GILL -- Designs for the new splash pad and playground at Zachary Communtiy Park were unveiled in July at a groundbreaking ceremony.

BREC officials will be at Zachary Community Park, 20055 Old Scenic Highway, at 6 p.m. Friday to unveil the park’s new amenities: a playground, splash pad and fitness equipment.

The playground’s centerpiece features a “Mega Tower” with three stories of fun and adventure and the tallest slide in the BREC system.

Surrounding the playground are a splash pad, three pavilions, plenty of seating, a merry-go-round and an entire section of swings, including regular swings, toddler swings and inclusive swings.

New fitness equipment and stretching stations can be found adjacent to the playground and lake.

Everyone is invited to attend the celebration that will feature a family walk, games, playground and splash pad fun, a meet and greet with a mermaid as well as food trucks, arts and crafts and more.

April 1 marked the opening of BREC’s splash pads in East Baton Rouge Parish, including Zachary Community Park and Greenwood Community Park in Baker. Additional splash pads opened at BREC’s City-Brooks, Forest, Highland and Jackson parks. The splash pads at each location are open daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. April through October.

At Greenwood, the splash pad/spray area can be activated with a green push-button found on the two 3-foot yellow poles in the spray area, while Zachary’s splash pad can be activated by selecting the brass button on the 3-foot yellow pole.

At each park, the button engages the systems’ spray features and runs for about two to three minutes before turning off. Pushing the button will activate the systems again.
