Johnette Downing, a New Orleans multi-award winning musician, singer and author presenting Louisiana Roots concerts and author visits for children, will entertain youth ages 2 to 11 with her South Louisiana brand of music at 2:30 p.m. Monday at the Zachary Library, 1900 Church St.

Children should come ready to sing and dance.

Teen Council meeting

Teens in grades seven through 12 are invited to have fun with a group of library-loving teens from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Zachary Library.

Teen Council Members will have a business meeting, then play Wii.

Rotary board meets, new officers installed

The Rotary Club of Zachary’s next board of directors meeting will begin at 10:30 a.m. June 16 at the Bank of Zachary, 4743 Main St.

The board meeting, which counts as a make-up meeting for any Rotarians who have missed a recent regular meeting, lasts about an hour. All board members are encouraged to attend.

Also, the annual officer installation banquet for the Zachary club begins at 6 p.m. June 30 at The Pointe at Americana, 1160 Americana Blvd., Zachary.

Club president Mindy Head will be handing over the leadership reins to incoming president Brandon Noel for the 2016-17 term. Rotary members and their guests are encouraged to sign up and attend.

Pen Pals host adoption event

Dixon Correctional Institute’s Pen Pals Animal Shelter in Jackson will host an adoption day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 19 at PetSense, 5875 Main St., Zachary.

Several breeds of dogs will be available for adoption at a cost of $40 per canine.

All Pen Pals animals have been vaccinated and spayed or neutered.

Concealed handgun class

The Baton Rouge Police Department is offering a Concealed Handgun Permit Class from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 25 at the Joint Law Enforcement Training Center, 999 W. Irene Road, Zachary.

The class is taught by Baton Rouge Police firearm instructors.

Anyone aged 21 and older is eligible to attend. Cost is $100, and participants must provide their own handgun and ammunition for the class, which is limited to 30 per session.

Deadline to register is June 23, and participants may register early from 8 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. Monday through Friday at the Baton Rouge Police Headquarters, Traffic-Records division, 9000 Airline Highway. Payment can be made by cash, check or money order, and receipt of payment will allow entry into the class.

College credit info night

Zachary High School will host a College Credit Plus information night for students and their parents at 6 p.m. June 28 in the school cafeteria, 4200 Bronco Lane.

The goal of the event is to promote rigorous academic pursuits and to provide a wide variety of options to college-ready students wishing to earn college credit while still in high school, district officials said.
