The Foundation Assisting Zachary Education received $1,000 through Entergy’s Micro Grants Program on Oct. 22.

Kevin Dreher, a customer service representative for Entergy based in Zachary, presented the check to FAZE President Kay Mestayer, a teacher at Zachary Early Learning Center.

FAZE Secretary Russell Blanchard and member Laura Steen attended the presentation held at the prekindergarten school.

Dreher said the Micro Grants Program accepts requests for up to $1,000 in all program areas: arts and culture, community improvement and enrichment, economic development, education and literacy, environment and healthy families.

Grants are awarded only to nonprofits.

Deanna Mankins, FAZE treasurer, applied for the grant. The amount distributed to each Zachary school will be based on October enrollment numbers, Steen said.

“I know it may not seem like a lot, but anything a teacher purchases for a classroom becomes the property of the school and can last a long time,” Mestayer said.

All funds raised by or donated to FAZE is used to support the schools, Blanchard said.

In the past, donations to FAZE, including grant monies, have assisted teachers in purchasing books, computers, band equipment and other items they can’t afford to purchase out-of-pocket.

One representative from each Zachary school is on the FAZE board, as are business and community leaders.
