Broncos place second in the East Regional Powerlifting Meet — Johnson breaks record

The Zachary Broncos powerlifting team continued the Zachary sport list of strong performances for the 2017-2018 year with a runner-up finish at the East Regional Powerlifting meet held Feb. 24 at Woodlawn High School. Coach Jason Davis was quite pleased with the effort and called the top 2 finish a great accomplishment.

Coach Davis indicated that they were named champions on Saturday, but due to a scoring technicality, he was called Monday morning and informed that the Broncos were runner-ups.

Aaron Young, who was also selected as the outstanding lifter, won the 148.8 weight class, 385-220-405-740. Keyshawn Sullivan scored in the playoff basketball game the previous night against East Ascension and won the 220.3 weight class, 520-245-510-1,275. Sullivan added that, “the meet was long but fun, and there’s nothing like being there with your team and competing to win first place.”

Caleb Johnson broke a 15-year record in the standing squat with a lift of 640 pounds and finished first with 640-295-510-1,440. Johnson indicated he “could feel the intensity of the moment at hand as I got under the bar. I had been training all week to prepare for that moment.” Similar to Sullivan, Johnson indicated it was a long day with aches and pains, but “faith, focus, consistency and physicality were the key.”

Superheavyweight Kolby Matthew finished third, 630-260-890-1,410. In the 123.5 weight class Blake VonKannel finished third, 230-115-255-600. Summer Troth and Treasure Garner also placed at fourth and fifth, respectively

The state championships will be held March 15-17 at the Rapides Parish Coliseum in Alexandria and Blake VonKannel, Keyshawn Sullivan, Aaron Young, Colby Matthews and Caleb Johnson have qualified to compete.

John Burrell wins coveted 'Z' award at football banquet

The 2017 State Champion Zachary Broncos met for the last time officially Feb. 28 to celebrate their second 5A State Championship in three years, reflect on an outstanding season and receive their 5A State Championship rings. Several awards and recognitions were provided throughout the night to recognize coaches, players, trainers and other support staff for the 2017 season.

The “Z” Award was developed by Coach David Brewerton and the coaching staff to replace the MVP award and recognize the player that during the offseason and regular season showed “outstanding character and the desire to go the extra mile.” This year’s award winner was senior John Burrell, who started at safety and was one of the key components that made the 2017 defense number 1 in 5A based on points allowed. Burrell will be taking his football and leadership talents to Louisiana College.
