During the Zachary Community School Board’s Nov. 17 meeting, Northwestern Middle School athletes Orsciana Beard, Sean Burrell and Kension Tate were honored.

The three are on local track teams and competed in the USA Track and Field National Junior Olympics over the summer in Jacksonville, Florida.

“It’s not just what they learn in that classroom; it’s how they learn to compete, whether it be in a field, a court, in the band or in the choir,” Superintendent Scott Devillier said.

At the Junior Olympics, Burrell won the pentathlon in his division, finishing third in the 400-meter run and seventh in the 800; Tate placed 10th in the long jump; and Beard placed 12th out of 54 junior high athletes in the hurdles.
