Zachary senior wins Athletic Foundation scholarship

The Zachary Athletic Foundation, in keeping with its mission of recognizing excellence both in the classroom and on the playing field, awarded senior Martel Fontenot the 2017-18 Boys Zachary Athletic Foundation Scholarship.

“ZAF congratulates Martell Fontenot, who has consistently demonstrated outstanding character, leadership, work ethic, team spirit and attitude throughout his years at Zachary High School," foundation President Brent Bradley said.

Athletic director and head football coach David Brewerton summarized Fontenot’s contributions to Zachary athletics. “Martel represented our school very well during his tenure as a Bronco," Brewerton said. "He was a leader on the soccer field and special teams mainstay for four years on the football team. His efforts were rewarded with two state football titles and a first team all-state selection as a kicker. He’s going to be a tough one to replace."

Like the foundation's girls scholarship winner Kristina Brooks, Fontenot was recognized by his peers; he was named Mr. ZHS. Fontenot will use the foundation scholarship to help pay for his education at Southern University, where he will punt and kick.

Applicants for the scholarship were judged on grade-point average, class rank, sports participated in at Zachary High School, and other extracurricular activities and accomplishments. Applicants also were asked to prepare an essay about how participating in athletics at Zachary prepared them for life after high school.

ZHS catcher selected to USA Baseball Tournament of Stars

The honors continue to roll in for the 2018 Zachary High baseball team with the selection of rising senior catcher Alex Milazzo’s selection to the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars.

Milazzo, an LSU baseball commitment, fought through an injured wrist to earn all-district 4-5A honors as a catcher. The tournament is an invite-only event where the top 80 players in the country compete for a spot on the 2018 18U National team.

Tournament of Stars is the “best of the best in baseball” and is similar to the Under Armour All American football game. Milazzo will travel to Cary, North Carolina, to the USA Baseball National Training Complex from June 17-24 to compete for one of the 40 slots to advance to the 18U National Team Trials from Aug. 7-14 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, with National Team training taking place Aug. 15-19.

As a warm-up to the Tournament of Stars, Milazzo competed June 8-9 at the Baseball Factory Under Armour All-American Showcase in Katy, Texas. If selected to the Under Armour All-American team, Milazzo will compete at Wrigley Field in July in a game that will be televised on the Major League Baseball Network.
