Zachary High junior Janie O’Connor is hitting her stride at the right time. She was the catalyst for her team’s dominating performance in the recent Class 5A Region 2 track and field meet at Catholic High.

O’Connor was named the Outstanding Track Performer as the Lady Broncos blistered the field, scoring 99 points. St. Joseph’s Academy was second (87.20) and Mandeville third (80).

Meanwhile, the Zachary boys finished seventh with 26 points as Catholic High placed first with 164.

Demonstrating the speed that has helped her win just about every event she’s entered during the indoor and outdoor seasons, O’Connor won the 100-meter dash in 11.62 seconds, the 200-meter dash in 24.05 seconds and the 400-meter in 55.27. She also anchored the 4x100 and 4x200 winning relay teams.

Other top Zachary girls finishers at the meet included Kristian Jackson, second, discus (123-05), and second, shot put (43-04); Frankie Griffin, second, high jump (5-03), and sixth, 300-meter hurdles (48.16); Kiara Bethley, third, 200 (25.75); A’nesya Dunn, third, javelin (110-2); Dakota Williams, fifth, 100 (12.66); Candace Baity, sixth, 100-meter hurdles (16.20); and the 4x400 relay team, fourth (4:09.06).

The Zachary boys were led by Evan Landry, second, javelin (166-11); Kellton Hollins, fourth, shot put (50-1.75); L’Jean McKneely, fifth, 110-meter hurdles (15.71); John Paul Hardin, fifth, 1,600 (4:32.63); Travis Simmons, fifth, 300-meter hurdles (41.06); and second place by the 4x100 relay team (43.03).

Next up is the LHSAA’s State Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Friday and Saturday at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.

Northeast boys 9th, girls 11th

The Northeast High School boys finished ninth and the girls 11th at the Region III Class 2A track and field meet at Episcopal. The boys finished with 20 points while the girls collected 12 at the annual meet.

Top finishers for the Vikings included Leroy Roddy, second, discus (119 feet, 10 inches), and fifth, shot put (41-4); Kendell Titus, third, 400-meter dash (52.41); and the 4x200 relay team, fourth.

Top finishers for the Lady Vikings were Brianna Haney, who won the shot put event with a toss of 34 feet, 11.25 inches, and the 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams, which both finished in sixth place.

Sandhu is singles runner-up

Zachary High tennis player Jot Sandhu finished as the singles runner-up for Division I boys at the LHSAA State Championship tournament. He was defeated by Nick Watson, of Catholic High, in the final, 6-2, 6-1. In the team standings, the Broncos were third with eight points behind champion Jesuit (12.5) and runner-up Catholic (11.5). The Zachary girls finished in a tie for ninth with two points.

Bronco golfers third in region

The Zachary High golf team placed third at the Division I, Region II tournament. Catholic High won with a 299 score, while Fontainebleau was second at 315 and Zachary third with 318.

The Bronco golfers were paced by Brady Bennett, who placed fifth with a 2-over 74. The state championships were scheduled for May 4-5.

The last few weeks of April and the first couple of May are exciting in prep sports, with championships being determined in a number of sports.

I haven’t forgotten about the Zachary baseball and softball teams, and their success in the post-season deserves more than a couple of paragraphs. So look for roundups of their championship runs on May 12.
