Third-grade teacher Jess McKowen Patti and fourth-grade teacher Molly Talbot were honored with certificates of recognition Sept. 15 by the Zachary School Board for recently authoring four Common Core-aligned books.
The pair were invited over the summer by the College of William and Mary to give a 12-hour presentation to educators of gifted students from across the country at the Center for Gifted Education’s Professional Summer Institute in Virginia.
As teachers and presenters, they shared classroom-tested ideas and activities for providing “highly able” students with challenging enrichment activities in math, as well as information about addressing the Common Core standards and related assessments.
As authors, Patti wrote a book for third-graders titled “Challenging Common Core Math Lessons: Activities and Extensions for Gifted and Advanced Learners.” Talbot penned one on the same subject but for fourth-graders.
The teachers began writing and researching the books about two years ago, Patti said.
“We’ve learned so much as educators, as well as learned from other educators,” Talbot said.
Since then, the Zachary Elementary teachers have authored two additional books. Patti’s second is the same “Challenging Common Core” title as above but for advanced fifth-graders, and Talbot’s is for advanced third-graders on Common Core-aligned lessons in English language arts. The second set of books are in the final editing stages and will be published this year. The first set is available on Amazon.
