Copper Mill Elementary students have excelled, once again, at the Louisiana Elementary Math Olympiad, an extracurricular math competition for fourth- and fifth-graders at Kenilworth Science and Technology School in February.

Of the event’s top 25 winners, eight were from Copper Mill: William Beasley, Matthew Bozeman, Gabrielle Chasse, Gabreyela Gonzalez, William Iannitelli, Gavin Malden, Dillon Moree and Claire Venable, with Gavin winning first place overall in the fifth-grade division.

Youths from dozens of schools around the state answer multiple-choice questions in various topics aligned to the Common Core standards.

At the 2015 math competition, Venable won third place, and Iannitelli finished eighth.

Prizes are awarded to top-placing students and their teachers, while those finishing in the fifth through 25th spots receive a Math Olympiad medal. All participants receive certificates.
