Members of Zachary High’s mock trial team are all smiles after winning the Louisiana State Bar Association’s High School Mock Trial state tournament in Baton Rouge on March 12.
Zachary, along with regional champions and runners-up from each of the state’s Bar Association regions, included teams from West Feliciana High School, Louise S. McGehee and Jesuit High schools in New Orleans and Early College Academy and Northside High, both from Lafayette.
The ZHS mock trial team defeated the two Lafayette teams in the preliminary rounds and West Feliciana in the state championship round, a rematch of the Region 3 finals that had Zachary defeating WFHS on Feb. 27.
This was the fourth consecutive trip to the state tournament for Zachary High and the school’s sixth appearance overall.
Mock trial teams from ZHS also won the LSBA state mock trial championship in 2013 and finished as runner-up in 2009 and 2014.
The state victory qualifies Zachary to compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championships in Boise, Idaho, May 12-14. The national tournament features the 50 U.S. championship teams, as well as champions from South Korea and the Northern Mariana Islands.
Zachary High’s mock trial team includes students John Carl Begley, Elise Goff, Aanan Henderson, Nash Joyner, Jake Robertson, Reagan Staggs and Shelby Waddell. Teacher-coaches are Staggs and Adrianne Dykes, and Zachary attorney Craig Kaster has served as the program’s attorney-coach since 2009.
