The city of Zachary is under contract with Waste Management for the pickup of bulky waste — items too large for a trash can — such as carpet, tree limbs, hot water heaters, sofas, stoves, mattresses or box springs. The items will be picked up once a week at each residence.
According to the city’s contract with Waste Management, acceptable tree limbs, discarded shrubs or lawn trimmings should be securely tied together for ease of pick-up and should not exceed 4 feet in length, 12 inches in diameter or weigh more than 35 pounds.
Residents must bundle these items into smaller piles.
Items that will not be picked up include building materials from construction or remodeling projects, demolition, repairs or tree limbs and tree trunks generated by a contractor hired by the homeowner. These items are the responsibility of the contractor, Zachary officials said.
Residents can call the Zachary Utility office at (225) 654-6871 for collection dates, which are dependent upon location of residence.
Also, residents can drop off at the East Baton Rouge Parish North Landfill, 16001 Samuels Road (U.S. 61), in Zachary, which accepts garbage and debris between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday. Garbage disposal is free for residents up to four times a month.
Bulky items, such as demolition debris or building materials, will be weighed and charged $28 per ton or $14 for 1,000 pounds or less.
For information, call the EBRP North Landfill at (225) 389-4813.
