The Zachary Chamber Ambassador Council — a select committee of volunteer professionals who support the development and growth of the Chamber of Commerce by enhancing public relations, communication endeavors, retaining membership, attracting new membership and serving as business liaisons to members of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce — is inviting others to join.

Baseball tryouts slated

Louisiana Legacy baseball tryouts for 9-, 11- and 12-and-under teams will be held Saturday at Zachary Youth Park, 1650 Mount Pleasant Road, on Field 5.

For those interested in playing on the 11- and 12-and-under teams, tryouts are from 8 a.m. until 10 a.m. For those hoping to play on the 9-and-under team, tryouts will be held from 10 a.m. until noon.

Tryout forms must be filled out and returned on Saturday before a player tries out for a team. To obtain a form, email

In addition, Louisiana Legacy is looking for a few good coaches. If anyone is interested — and unrelated to a player — email your résumé to the address above.

School supplies handout

The Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Zachary Committee will host its annual Back-to-School Supplies Giveaway and Health Fair from 9:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Saturday at the Zachary High School gym.

Besides school supplies, fingerprinting and identification badges for children will be featured, as well as door prizes, refreshments and a visit by Zachary firefighters.

Parents must be present with their child/children at this family event.

Donations in the form of canned goods or nonperishable food items are requested.

Lunch and Learn planned

The Zachary Chamber of Commerce will host its next Lunch and Learn event from 11:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Americana YMCA, 4200 Liberty Way, Zachary.

Networking begins at 11:30 a.m. followed by a catered lunch and guest speaker Paul Arrigo, president and CEO of Visit Baton Rouge.

Cost to attend is $15 for Chamber members and $20 for nonmembers. To register, visit

Back-to-School Health Expo

Southeast Community Health Systems, in conjunction with the Zachary Men’s Club, invites Baker and Zachary families to its Back-to-School Health Expo from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 8, at Zachary High School.

Door prizes, face painting, food, giveaways, school supplies and school uniform vouchers will be featured.

Dental and health screenings for blood pressure, glucose levels, height and weight will be administered.

Also, patients with the following health plans are invited to participate: Aetna, AmeriHealth Caritas, Bayou Health, Louisiana Healthcare Connections and United Healthcare Community.

Women’s self-defense class

The Baton Rouge Police Department is offering an Equalizer Women’s Self-Defense class in August.

Four sessions will be held at the Baton Rouge Police Department Training Academy, 9000 Airline Highway.

Class time for each session is from 6 p.m. until 10 p.m. on Aug. 18, 20, 25 and 27.

There is no charge to attend for women ages 14 and older. Participants should wear comfortable clothing suitable for physical activity.

The course covers facts about violence against women, reducing the risk of becoming a victim, defensive striking, common grab defenses, head-lock defenses, bear hug defenses, striking and knife defense and group escapes.

Participants must attend all four sessions to become certified. Class size is limited, so women should register early by visiting and searching Baton Rouge Police Department Woman’s Equalizer Class — August registration.
