Kate MacArthur, executive director of the Zachary Chamber of Commerce and the city’s economic development director, and Mayor David Amrhein spoke Feb. 4 at the chamber’s monthly Lunch and Learn at the Americana YMCA.

Amrhein addressed the city’s recent construction and infrastructure projects, saying construction on the fifth lane of Main Street between La. 19 and McHugh Road should begin sometime in May.

MacArthur talked about challenges of attracting and retaining more businesses.

“The goal is to find a way we can grow and find ways for retail to coexist alongside residential while keeping everyone happy,” MacArthur said.

Amrhein and MacArthur agreed that the only way a city can grow is to attract more businesses.

“Cities that become stagnant die,” Amrhein said.

The monthly Lunch and Learn is a business networking event sponsored by the chamber and held the first Wednesday of every month. Speakers are often featured. Cost to attend is $15 for chamber members and $20 for nonmembers and includes a catered lunch and door prizes.
