Retired Judge Edward "Jimmy" Gaidry has been named to fill on an interim basis the seat on the 18th Judicial District Court left vacant by the retirement of former Judge Robin Free.

The Supreme Court announced Gaidry's appointment as judge pro tempore to Division B of the district court, which hears cases from Iberville, West Baton Rouge and Pointe Coupee parishes.

His appointment is effective for the period of July 14 through Dec. 31 "or until the vacancy is filled, whichever occurs sooner," the order states.

Gaidry was previously on Louisiana's 1st Circuit Court of Appeal until reaching the mandatory retirement age of 70 in 2012. He has been in a private law practice with his son in Houma, according to information on the law firm's website.
