A 17-year-old Baton Rouge man was arrested Friday and is accused of shooting an acquaintance in the back early Saturday morning on Kleinpeter Road.

Benjamin Jamal Allen was walking down the street with a friend in the 6600 block of Kleinpeter Road about 12:15 a.m. when the victim, who was walking home from the gas station, noticed them on the road, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office report says.

The victim caught up to them and briefly greeted them before he continued walking past them, the report says. The victim told deputies that shortly after he passed them he heard rapid footsteps behind him, and when he turned he saw Allen pointing a gun at the his back.

When the victim tried to run away, Allen shot him in the back, the report says. Detectives discovered shell casings in the roadway and the victim struck by gunfire when they responded to a call that shots were fired in the area.

The victim was taken to a local hospital for immediate surgery, though his injuries did not appear life-threatening.

The victim later identified Allen in a photographic lineup as the one who shot him, and deputies booked Allen, 10553 Clearview Ave., into East Baton Rouge Parish Prison early Friday morning on attempted second-degree murder, illegal use of a weapon, and simple criminal damage to property.
