Baton Rouge police arrested a man accused of drunkenly causing a head-on collision on Friday night — an accident that injured one person — and then fleeing the scene on foot.

Thomas Shepherd was heading north on Scenic Highway across from Southern University when he crossed the center divider and crashed into an oncoming car, according to a police report. The crash caused a large cut to the driver’s head, but Shepherd quickly took off on foot before police arrived, leaving behind a bottle of gin spilled on the floor of his car, the report says.

Officers found Shepherd a few blocks away, with alcohol spilled on his clothes, the report says. He took a breath test to determine how much alcohol was in his system and blew .247 percent — more than three times the legal limit.

Shepherd, 35, 1684 Robinson St., Baker, was booked into Parish Prison on counts of first-offense DWI, hit-and-run, driving left of center, drinking in motor vehicle, reckless operation of vehicle and vehicular negligent injuring.

BR woman killed in Choctaw Drive incident

Baton Rouge police say a 43-year-old woman was killed when she lost control of her SUV on Choctaw Drive and crashed early Saturday morning.

Angela Ayers, 12329 Lorna Ave., was heading west on South Choctaw Drive near North Flannery Road just after midnight Saturday when her 2005 Chrysler Pacifica veered and slammed into a utility pole, said Cpl. L’Jean McKneely, a Baton Rouge police spokesman.

Ayers, who was wearing a seat belt, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol is not thought to be a factor in the crash, McKneely said.
