After being beaten by his father, a 10-year-old boy ran away from home wearing no shoes in a torrential rain Sunday night before he was picked up by a concerned citizen, officials said.
The incident started before 9:30 p.m. Sunday when John T. Charles, 69, struck his son on the neck, back and arms with a leather belt, according to a Baton Rouge Police affidavit of probable cause. The injuries caused swelling and skin breaks on the boy, resulting in “extreme physical pain,” the document said.
The boy fled his residence at 224 Crestview Ave., in Baton Rouge and ran in the heavy rain, shoeless, for a half mile before he flagged down an automobile to ask for protection from his father, according to the affidavit.
Charles admitted to beating the boy, saying “he was merely attempting to properly discipline his child,” the document said.
Charles remains booked in the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of second degree battery and cruelty to a juvenile. His bail was set at $15,000, according to jail records.
