A fight outside the Pointe Coupee Multi-Use Center Saturday following an annual trail ride led to a non-fatal shooting that landed a 21-year-old man in jail, New Roads Police Chief Kevin McDonald said Sunday.

A brawl involving multiple people broke out about 9 p.m. when the suspected shooter, Cleo Johnigan III, 918 David St., New Roads, pulled out a handgun and fired several shots, McDonald said.

A 20-year-old man, whom McDonald did not identify, was hit in the foot and grazed on the head by bullets. He was treated at a hospital and release. No one else was hit during the shooting, McDonald said.

The shooting remains under investigation and the chief said it was still unclear if the victim had been involved in the brawl.

Johnigan was booked into Pointe Coupee Parish Jail early Sunday on one count of attempted second-degree murder.
