Update 1:42 p.m.

The child was shot in the midsection and is in surgery with possibly life-threatening injuries, Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman Sgt. L'Jean McKneely said.

McKneely also said that the shooting, which happened around 11 a.m. at the child's home in the 9400 block of Gassie Street, appears to have been accidental. It is unclear who shot the gun. The incident remains under investigation.

Original story

A 5-year-old child was shot on Sunday afternoon, but those injuries do not appear to be life threatening, EMS spokesman Mike Chustz said.

The child was taken to the LSU clinic on Airline Highway by private transport, but then EMS brought the child to a hospital from there, Chustz said.

It was previously reported that the child was younger, but Chustz and McKneely now say the child was 5-years-old.

More information to come.
