Law enforcement arrested 18 people from three parishes Tuesday during a warrant roundup targeting those who illegally obtain prescription drugs, a Baton Rouge police spokesman said.

The roundup took place early Tuesday in East Baton Rouge, Iberville and Livingston parishes and involved the Baton Rouge Police Department, East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office, Louisiana State Police and U.S. Marshall’s Fugitive Task Force, Cpl. L’Jean McKneely said.

The roundup, called Operation Overdose, is an ongoing investigation that targets people who try to get prescription drugs from multiple doctors as well as people who use fraudulent means to get the drugs, McKneely said.

“These individuals commonly travel to doctors in Texas who freely prescribe controlled substances while also under the care of local practitioners for the same medical problem,” he said. “Those prescriptions are then filled at different local pharmacies.”

The majority of the illegally obtained narcotics are sold on the street for profit for as much as one dollar per milligram, McKneely said.
