Deputies on Monday arrested a man who they said held his ex-girlfriend at knife point in December, demanding she hand over her car keys while she was holding their child in her arms.

Cody Reshard Steward, 23, was arrested Monday night over the Dec. 17 incident that started when he and the victim got into an argument, an East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office report says.

Steward broke the woman’s television, and when the victim threatened to call law enforcement, he began beating her in her bed, according to the report.

The victim told detectives that Steward strangled her from behind and then went to the kitchen and grabbed a knife. He put the knife to her neck while she held their child in her arms, the report says. Steward asked for the keys to the victim’s car, and she refused to hand them over.

Steward told her, “I’ll split your throat if you don’t give me the keys to your car,” the victim told investigators.

Steward took the child and ran outside, the report says, but the victim followed him and took the child back. Steward stabbed the front passenger side tire on her vehicle before he left the apartment in a taxi cab, the report says.

Deputies noticed welts on the victim’s left cheek bone and between her eyebrows. Pictures were taken of her injuries.

Steward, 6630 Siegen Lane, Apt. 258, was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on counts of domestic abuse battery child endangerment, criminal damage to property and domestic abuse aggravated assault.
