A Baton Rouge woman received a protective order Wednesday against her husband accused of kicking her and injuring a pet kitten during an argument on Monday.
Steven Randall Norton, 31, was arrested Monday after his wife told investigators he “kicked her off the bed into the wall” during an argument at their Wicklow Drive home, according to an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office report.
Norton’s wife told deputies he walked into a bathroom after kicking her, and when he exited, the family’s pet kitten, which was in the bathroom, was bleeding from its nose and barely breathing, the report says.
The kitten was young; it was still being bottle-fed when it was injured, the report says.
Norton’s wife told investigators she believed her husband broke the kitten’s neck, the report says.
When interviewed by deputies, Norton told them “he did not leave bruises or marks on his wife,” the report says. He also told deputies the kitten was injured before he walked into the bathroom, and he did not hurt the pet.
Norton’s wife told investigators the kitten was not sick or injured before her husband walked into the bathroom after the argument.
State District Judge Bonnie Jackson signed the protective order on Wednesday. The document orders Norton to stay away from his wife for a year.
Norton was previously charged with domestic abuse battery against his wife following a February 2014 incident. The charge was dismissed by prosecutors about two months ago, court records show.
Norton, of 5145 Wicklow Drive, Baton Rouge, was booked into Parish Prison on Monday on counts of domestic abuse battery and cruelty to animals. His bail was set at $40,000, court records show, and he remained jailed on Wednesday evening.
