An early morning house fire in Baton Rouge Sunday sent flames spurting through the roof that were visible from blocks away.

The blaze started shortly before 3 a.m. in a vacant home awaiting rennovation on River Road south of Gardere Lane, said St. George Fire Department spokesman Eldon Ledeoux.

When firefighters arrived, the fire had burned through the roof and flames were visible from Burbank Drive and Bluebonnet Boulevard, Ledeoux said.

Firefighters brought the fire under control shortly after 4 a.m., but not before the home was severely damanged, said Ledeoux, who estimated that 50 percent of the structure was damaged by the fire.

Several fire crews continued to hose down hot spots at the fire hours after the flames had been brought under control.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, Ledeoux said.
