Pawn shop employees were showing a gun to a pair of men Monday afternoon when one snatched the weapon, and both took off. The staff gave chase, stopping only when one of the robbers pulled a second firearm and shot and injured one of the pawnbrokers, police said.

The shooting happened about 2 p.m. outside City Pawn Shop at 8271 Airline Highway, said Baton Rouge Police Cpl. Don Coppola. Investigators still are looking for the robbers, who have not yet been identified.

Store manager Kevin Hayes had been showing a Smith & Wesson handgun to the men as pawnbroker Jean Paul Guillory looked on, the two men told The Advocate.

When Hayes handed the weapon over, the two men bolted out of the store and split up. Hayes followed one toward the road, while Guillory chased the other around the side of the building.

“I was just reacting,” Guillory said. “It all happened so fast.”

The man he was chasing pulled out another gun and fired at Guillory mid-pursuit. Hayes was on another side of the building when he heard about three shots ring out.

“I was worried, you know? I was worried. Who knows what happened around that building? It could have been fatal,” he said.

Guillory, however, was hit in the leg and was discharged from the hospital a few hours after the incident.

Now, store staff are hoping the police will catch up with the gunman. Hayes said the two men were captured on the business’s security cameras.

Anyone with information on the case should call Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
