A 3-year-old hospitalized with a gunshot wound Thursday accidentally shot himself with a stolen gun, said Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola Jr.

Coppola said police responded around 5 p.m. Thursday to a call from a hospital where doctors were treating the child for a gunshot wound on his lower limbs. The child shot himself in his left leg after finding the stolen gun, which police later recovered, Coppola said.

Emergency Medical Services spokesman Mike Chustz said the boy was transported to the hospital by private vehicle. Coppola said the injuries appear to be non-life threatening and police are investigating.
