Baton Rouge firefighters are investigating the cause of a Monday morning blaze that destroyed a home at 2329 America St.
The resident of the home was present when the fire broke out but escaped unharmed, Fire Department spokesman Curt Monte said.
The call came in reporting the fire at 2:23 a.m., Monte said. When firefighters arrived, the house was fully engulfed in flames, Monte said.
A home next door had some light heat damage from the fire but firefighters were able to keep the blaze from spreading, Monte said.
Police arrest woman in theft from store
A 29-year-old woman was arrested Sunday for allegedly trying to stab a store manager when he accused her of stealing several pairs of shoes, court documents say.
Lakeitha D. Williams, also known as Noonie Kat, was at Shoe Carnival, 10500 N. Mall Drive, at 7:50 p.m. Aug. 13 with another woman and a child when they walked to the front of the store with several pairs of shoes, the warrant says.
The store manager confronted them and Williams placed the child between her and the manager when the manager tried to grab the merchandise, the warrant says. She then tried to stab the manager, the warrant says.
The manager backed off and the women and the child left with about $230 worth of shoes, the warrant says.
East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office investigators arrested Williams, who was out on bond for a similar incident on April 21 at White House Black Market, 7519 Corporate Blvd., the warrant says.
Williams, 2581 70th St., was booked into Parish Prison on charges of armed robbery, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and obstruction of justice.
