Two California residents were killed in a wreck on Interstate 10 near Sorrento when their pickup truck ran off the road and struck a tree Wednesday evening, State Police say.
The driver of the truck, James Rodgers, 25, of San Jacinto, and a rear-seat passenger, Wanda Kinchloe, 58, of Hemet, were both pronounced dead at the scene by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, said Trooper First Class Bryan Lee, a spokesman for the State Police.
A third passenger, riding in the front seat, survived the wreck with serious injuries and was taken to a hospital, Lee said.
Rodgers was driving eastbound on I-10 “at a high rate of speed” around 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in a 2004 Ford pickup truck “when he made an abrupt lane change and lost control of his vehicle,” Lee said.
The truck ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree, Lee said.
Rodgers and the passenger who survived the wreck were both wearing seat belts, Lee said. The passenger who was killed was not.
A toxicology sample from Rodgers has been sent to the State Police Crime Lab to determine whether he was impaired.
