A Tuesday evening fire at the Sonic Drive-In on Coursey Boulevard left one person injured and the fast food restaurant’s building moderately damaged, the St. George Fire Department said.
St. George and Baton Rouge firefighters arrived at the Sonic, 11145 Coursey Blvd., a few minutes after 6 p.m. to find smoke billowing from the restaurant’s back door, said Eldon Ledoux, a St. George Fire Department spokesman.
It took about 13 minutes for the blaze, which occurred inside the building, to be deemed under control, Ledoux said.
Six employees were working at the restaurant when the fire occurred, Ledoux said, and one was taken to a hospital for evaluation and treatment.
The fire was not intentionally set, Ledoux said, although the exact cause remained undetermined Tuesday night. The fire was contained to a rear portion of the Sonic building, Ledoux said.
The blaze marked at least the second time a Sonic in Baton Rouge caught fire.
A different Sonic on Burbank Drive near Bluebonnet Boulevard caught fire in November 2011. The blaze, which was sparked by some pesticide accidentally sprayed on an electrical outlet, destroyed the building, and the Sonic was never rebuilt.
A car wash later opened on the same plot of land.
