Flames ripped through the rear porch, kitchen and attic of a house at 525 South 17th Street late Thursday, while the rest of the home sustained heavy heat, smoke and water damage, the Baton Rouge Fire Department announced.

Firefighters arrived on scene at 10:08 p.m., deploying four pumper trucks, one ladder truck and two support vehicles, and had the blaze under control by 10:25 p.m. Damage is estimated at $30,000 to the $45,000 house, department spokesman Curt Monte said.

“No one was home at the time of the fire and investigators were trying to determine who lived at the residence,” he said. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, he said.
