Two people – a shooting victim and a pedestrian – were injured Monday night in north Baton Rouge, police said.

Around 8 p.m. Monday, a 39-year-old man gave an unknown suspect a ride to the 2700 block of Dayton Street, Baton Rouge Police spokesman Sgt. Don Coppola said. When the man dropped the suspect off, there were words exchanged, and an argument ensued, Coppola said. The suspect then allegedly shot the man in the shoulder.

The shooting victim tried to drive away, but crashed into a nearby ditch, Coppola said. As he was backing out of the ditch, he struck a woman attempting to cross the street.

Both the shooting victim and the pedestrian were transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Coppola said. An update on their conditions was not immediately available.

It does not appear that the shooting victim and the suspect knew each other, Coppola said.
