UPDATE: The East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office reported Friday that bank robbery suspect William Mathis has been apprehended.

Bank robbery suspect believed to be in Fla.

The Sheriff’s Office said Thursday that its investigators believe the man who robbed a Regions Bank on O’Neal Lane on Wednesday afternoon is now somewhere in Florida.

With the help of an anonymous Crime Stoppers tip, deputies identified the suspect in the bank robbery as William Mathis, 46, of Albany, saying they believe he’s now in Florida and that they are still looking for him, Casey Rayborn Hicks, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman, said in a news release.

Witnesses told deputies that a man walked into the bank about 3:40 p.m. and handed a teller a note demanding money. After the teller handed over an undisclosed amount of money, the man walked out of the store and fled in a red Ford F-250 pickup truck toward Interstate 12, Hicks said.

Anyone with information about Mathis’ location is asked to call the Sheriff’s Office at (225) 389-5064 or Crime Stoppers at (225) 344-7867.
