Teacher accused of punching student

A McKinley High School teacher was arrested on Wednesday after allegedly punching a student in the face during an argument about the student’s attempts to go to his locker, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Deputies were dispatched to the school at 800 E. McKinley St. at 6:50 a.m. in reference to the argument, Casey Rayborn Hicks said. When they arrived, deputies learned Richard Glasgow Haywood, 61, had pushed, then hit a 15-year-old student, Hicks said.

The student was in the hallway trying to go to his locker when Haywood told him it was past time to do so, Hicks said.

Haywood and the student exchanged words as the student tried to walk past Haywood to go to his locker, Hicks said.

Haywood pushed the student, and the student pushed Haywood back, Hicks said.

Haywood then punched the student in the face, causing swelling to his eye, she said.

Haywood, 5741 Castile Ave., was booked into Parish Prison on a count of cruelty to a juvenile.

Haywood was placed on paid administrative leave, pending an internal investigation into the incident, said Chris Trahan, a spokesman with the East Baton Rouge Parish school system.

Trahan said Haywood has been a teacher with the school system since 1999.
