Baton Rouge police are investigating the death of a man who was struck in the head with a wrench during a fight Thursday.

A woman walking toward her parked car at 3:35 a.m. saw that the lights were on and someone appeared to be inside the vehicle, Lt. Don Kelly, a Baton Rouge Police Department spokesman, said in a news release.

The woman, who was not identified, alerted her 28-year old boyfriend, who also was not identified. He armed himself with a wrench and confronted Jerry Sheppard, 47, of 5746 Avenue K, Zachary, Kelly said.

Sheppard and the boyfriend began fighting, and at some point, Sheppard was struck in the head with the wrench, Kelly said.

He was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical center where he died Friday night.

Kelly said it did not appear as though Sheppard was armed.

He also said he couldn’t say whether Sheppard had broken into the vehicle or was attempting to burglarize it.

No one has been charged with a crime, but the investigation is continuing, Kelly said.
