After being pursued by authorities chasing reported Walmart thieves, a stolen SUV flipped over near the College Drive exit off westbound Interstate 10 just after 2 p.m. Friday, prompting one of its occupants to flee and leaving at least one other person with minor injuries, officials said.
Three women were arrested on counts of possession of a stolen vehicle and stolen goods, said East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s spokeswoman Casey Rayborn Hicks, who was unable to provide the defendants’ names late Friday. A young man who ran from the scene is still at large, she said.
Hicks said deputies received a call about someone stealing “a buggy full of items” from the Walmart store on the corner of Burbank Drive and Bluebonnet Boulevard around 2 p.m. A deputy who spotted a vehicle matching the description of an automobile linked to the theft tried to stop the SUV on westbound I-10 near the Essen Lane exit, but the vehicle sped off, she said. The SUV, which was reported by Baton Rouge Police to be stolen Thursday, crashed a few miles away near the College Drive exit, she said.
A male with a slight build fled, while two women were checked for injuries, she said. Three women in total were involved, one with a felony warrant for her arrest, Hicks said. Hicks was not able to verify the names or ages of the vehicle’s occupants.
Authorities found the vehicle in the crash to be the same one tied to the theft of some $200 worth of merchandise from Walmart, Hicks said.
Baton Rouge EMS spokesman Mike Chustz said a patient was treated for minor injuries in an ambulance following the incident.
Hicks said an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
