Local police agencies rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center Saturday night in response to a report there was a gunman inside the hospital, but the report turned out to be false.

At least 20 units, from the Baton Rouge Police Department, the East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office and State Police rushed to the scene, their vehicles lined up on a ramp leading to the emergency room with lights flashing.

It eventually was determined that a hospital employee had misinterpreted the sound of a slamming door as a gunshot, leading to a 911 call and lockdown of the hospital about 7:30 p.m., Baton Rouge police spokesman Cpl. Don A. Coppola said

“Any situation which is believed to involve an active shooter is taken very seriously, especially when the report comes from a large venue such as a hospital or school,” Coppola said.
