A woman is dead and a man is in critical condition after two separate incidents overnight in Baton Rouge.
Baton Rouge police identified a woman killed Monday night when she was struck by a car as she was walking in the middle of 72nd Avenue, police said.
Maria Cunningham, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene, and investigators suspect she may have been drinking alcoholic beverages or she was on drugs before she was hit, said Cpl. Don Coppola, a police spokesman, in a news release.
The incident happened at 11:50 p.m. in the 2900 block of 72nd Avenue. When police arrived, they found a vehicle in the road facing Cunningham, according to a news release sent out early Tuesday morning.
Coppola said Tuesday afternoon that a Honda Accord driven by a 23-year-old man was proceeding west on 72nd Avenue when Cunningham was struck. It was not clear whether the Accord struck Cunningham or whether the Accord was the car found in the road Monday night.
At 2:09 a.m. Tuesday, police arrived in the 1800 block of North Foster Drive and found an unidentified black male shot multiple times lying in a parking lot. The victim is in critical condition at a local hospital.
