A McKinley High School teacher was arrested Wednesday after punching a student in the face during an argument about the student’s attempts to go to his locker, an East Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.
Deputies were dispatched to the school at 800 E. McKinley St. at 6:50 a.m. in reference to the argument, Casey Rayborn Hicks said.
When they arrived, deputies learned that Richard Glasgow Haywood, 61, had pushed and then hit a 15-year-old student, Hicks said.
The student was in the hallway trying to go to his locker when Haywood told him it was past time to do so, Hicks said.
Haywood and the student exchanged words as the student tried to walk past Haywood to go to his locker, Hicks said.
Haywood pushed the student and the student pushed Haywood back, Hicks said. Haywood then punched the student in the face, causing swelling to his eye, she said.
Haywood, 5741 Castile Ave., was booked into Parish Prison on a count of cruelty to a juvenile.
