The grandmother of 11-month-old Jericho Smith, who was found and stabbed to death last Saturday in Zachary, called the child's death "unbelievable."

Theresa Tolbert, who is Smith's maternal grandmother, said the death is "very tragic, very painful" for both sides of the family. Her daughter, the baby's mother, was married to 33-year-old Fabian Smith, who was arrested Saturday and booked on one count each of first-degree murder and second-degree cruelty to a juvenile.

The baby's death has been ruled a homicide.

Tolbert said she questions what could have altered her son-in-law during the killing, mentioning possible alcohol use.

"There's many thing in this world that change (someone from) who they are naturally," Tolbert said. She said she has not heard from authorities if he had any alcohol or drugs in his system at the time.

The infant was found by a neighbor unresponsive, in a pool of blood on a bedroom floor of Smith's house.

Zachary Police Chief David McDavid said Smith told the neighbor: “I done messed up — call 911.”

The child was pronounced dead at the scene.

Advocate staff writer Grace Toohey contributed to this report.
