A Wallis Street house sustained heavy smoke damage in a fire Monday afternoon that was contained to the kitchen, according to the Baton Rouge Fire Department.

No one was home at the 12844 Wallis St. home at the time, and the cause of the fire is undetermined, said Mark Miles, a spokesman with the department.

Firefighters arrived at the scene at 3:15 p.m. to find smoke coming from the single-family home, Miles said. Crews entered through the front door and found a fire in the kitchen area.
