State Police have identified the passenger killed in a single-vehicle crash on La. 19 in Slaughter early Saturday as Joyce Williams, 41, of Clinton.

Troopers from State Police Troop A responded to the crash shortly before 4 a.m. and found the driver, Tasha Whitfield, of Jackson, and Williams dead at the scene, said State Police spokesman Bryan Lee.

A third passenger, a woman, escaped with moderate injuries, Lee said in a news release.

Whitfield, 26, was traveling northbound on La. 19 north of La. 956 in a 2006 Chevrolet Impala when, for unknown reasons, the vehicle crossed the center line and ran off the left side of the road, striking a concrete abutment, Lee said.

The crash caused the vehicle to catch fire while Whitfield and the passengers were still inside, he said.

The East Feliciana Parish Coroner’s Office pronounced Whitfield and Williams dead at the scene. The survivor was transported to Our Lady of the Lake, Lee said.

The crash remains under investigation.
