Sheriff: Burglar shoots self in leg with stolen gun _lowres

A 19-year-old Zachary man accidentally shot himself in the leg Thursday while breaking into cars outside a Baton Rouge hotel, investigators said.

Ian Scamardo shot himself with a stolen gun while burglarizing cars parked outside the Crestwood Suites hotel at 5222 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd., according to the arrest report.

The incident happened about 4 a.m. outside the hotel, where Scamardo was staying with his girlfriend and their infant child, East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies said.

Scamardo initially told investigators he had been shot by another person, the report says.

He stole $450 and the gun from the three cars he broke into, deputies said. He also shoplifted $1,020 in alcohol from a Target at 6885 Siegen Lane, the report says.

Scamardo, 2337 Northwind Ave., was booked into Parish Prison on counts of theft of a firearm, theft of goods, aggravated battery, simple battery, criminal mischief, resisting an officer with force or violence and simple burglary.
