Four members of a family were able to escape a fire early Tuesday that left their Alliquipa Street home heavily damaged, the Baton Rouge Fire Department reported.
The residents told investigators they were awakened by the smell of smoke sometime after 5 a.m. and immediately got out of the house. Firefighters arrived at 4415 Alliquipa St., at 5:28 a.m. and found a rear room engulfed in flames. The blaze spread into the kitchen before being brought under control 13 minutes after firefighters arrived.
Investigators say the fire was caused by a faulty electrical outlet in the home.
Fire and smoke damage was estimated at $33,000.
