Report: Man finds gun, commits robbery
An 18-year-old told police he found a handgun in a ditch Saturday morning and used it to rob a person of his bicycle a short time later, an arrest document says.
Devanta Tremon Matthews, 10032 Avenue I St., Apt. 4A, was booked into Parish Prison on a count of armed robbery, booking records show. His bail Sunday morning was $75,000.
According to Matthews’ arrest document, this is what happened:
The victim told Baton Rouge police that a man in black clothes pointed a black handgun in his face and took his Schwinn bicycle about 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
The gunman rode the bike west on Elmer Street where he stopped and picked up a woman. The two rode off with the woman sitting on the handle bars.
A Baton Rouge Police officer patrolled the area on foot and found a man and woman matching the descriptions given by the victim.
The woman told the officer she didn’t know how Matthews got the bike, just that he had picked her up. Matthews admitted to the officer that he robbed the victim, but said he used a BB gun.
However, a “concerned citizen” told an officer that Matthews had hidden a handgun under a Ford Falcon in the 9800 block of Avenue I. An officer searched and found a Glock 22, which was wrapped in Matthews’ black shirt.
Matthews admitted lying about the gun because he said he was scared, and hid the gun under the car when he saw the police.
Matthews told police the gun was not his. He said he found the gun in the ditch on Elmer Street and used it to rob the victim, the arrest document says.
