Sheriff’s deputies have arrested a woman accused of setting fires outside her next-door neighbor’s apartment two times in the same night, on August 31, causing damage to the side of the victim’s unit.
The incident began when an apartment resident awoke on his living room couch to find fire coming through his front window, according to the arrest warrant. He told police that when he stepped outside he saw Shannon Veal, 35, standing on his porch next to his gas canister, which was on fire.
Veal told him she was trying to light his barbecue grill, the warrant says. The neighbor put out the flames and Veal walked away.
But only a few minutes later the neighbor saw fire outside his apartment again, and when he rushed outside found Veal had returned — and that this time some tools were on fire as well, the warrant says.
Police later tried several times but were unable to get in touch with Veal, according to the warrant. Veal, of 8562 Rush Avenue, was booked into Parish Prison Friday on a count of aggravated arson.
